Until recently, the Harz region in Germany was home to endless green spruce forests. But within just a few years, nearly all of the spruce trees died, leaving behind a grey, almost apocalyptic landscape. I travelled to the Harz to understand how these forests could vanish so rapidly and spoke with Martin Baumgartner, spokesperson for Harz National Park, about the future of the region.
